Professor Aree Soothipunt

Professor Aree Soothipunt was born in Rajaburi, Thailand. He graduated at the Srinakharinwirot University in 1957 with a Bachelor Degree and later furthers his Master Degree at the Indiana University USA in 1961. He is one of the country's most respected artist and teacher. After spending thirty four years at the Srinakharinwirot University, he has retired from full-time teaching, however, he is still actively painting, exhibiting, and teaching part-time. Recently, he participated in a collective exhibition of Thailand's foremost contemporary artists entitled, '50 years of Thai Art 1946-1997', which was arranged to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of His Majesty the King.

Professor Aree Soothipunt's paintings focus on personal images of women, temples, and the Ramayana epic. His gestural paintings of the female form are painted directly from life using first-hand images of women in a symbolic and graphic style reminiscent of western art. His work explores the use of color as an expressive tool which completely energises all his work. His water color temple scenes were painted on location and are saturated with tropical light. They beckon us to strengthen our ties with our own cultural background. He feels that the young generation should visit the temples, libraries, and shopping center, as a triaxial balance in their lives.
