Pote Saugawongse (1939-2002)
 

        Pote Saugawongse was born in Ubol , Thailand in 1939. He was one of the most well-known Thai Impressionist artist at the current time. Pote received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Silapakorn University in 1964. In that year he received first prize in painting at Christian Center , Bangkok . The following year Pote went on to win first prize in painting awarded by Cathay Pacific Airlines for Asia Contemporary artists.

Pote has held several exhibitions both in Bangkok and overseas. A few of his notable achievements are as follows:-

 

1967-1969 - One man show at Trio Gallery, Bangkok .
1975 - First award in Oils, American Heritage Art Fair, Santa Monica City USA .
1976 - First prize oil painting, Northridge Art Show.
  - Second award, Western Los Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce
   13th Semi-Annual Art Show.
1979 - Second prize in oil painting, Century City Spring Festival of the Arts.
  - Second prize graphics, Santa Monica Arts Show.
 

       The theme of Pote's composition usually revolves around street scenes and country life, road side stalls, trishaws and people, which comes alive in his paintings. Pote's style is simple yet natural and charming.

        Although his forte is oil painting he also employs the genres of watercolor and xylography. His brush paintings are extremely masterful and show a synthesis of Eastern and Western art techniques, which is very appealing. Despite his fame, Pote was a very humble person who shuns publicity. He prefers to keep away from social gathering and appears more comfortable sketching among the crowds by the seaside.

        His works have been featured in various publications in Thailand . At the Christie's Art Auction in May 1998 in Thailand , at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center , his work well received and achieved very good offers. His paintings are collected by Banks and various corporate bodies both in Thailand and Overseas.
